San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Operators Assessing Leak and Shutdown of Reactor Unit

ROSEMEAD, Calif., Feb. 1, 2012 – Southern California Edison (SCE), operator of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, continues to plan for the repair of the steam generator tube leak in Unit 3 following a precautionary shutdown Tuesday. Sensitive monitoring instruments at Unit 3 continue to show no change in radiation levels that would be detectable off-site.

Operators responded quickly yesterday to indications of a steam generator tube leak based on readings from highly sensitive instruments designed to detect this condition, and in time to take action to prevent any potential change in detectable radiation exposure outside the plant boundary. Operators safely shut the plant down and isolated the component that contained the leaking tube within four hours of detecting the indications.

Currently, operators are cooling down Unit 3 and reducing pressure in the plant, which is the method to stop the tube from leaking. They are meticulously following prescribed procedures written specifically for addressing a tube leak condition.

"There was no threat then, nor is there now any danger to the public or to plant workers," said Pete Dietrich, senior vice president and Chief Nuclear Officer for Southern California Edison.  “Our operators performed exactly as they are trained to perform and took prompt action to ensure we did not create a situation involving any challenge to the health and safety of the public,” Dietrich said.

Unit 2 is currently offline for a planned maintenance, refueling and technology upgrade outage. Service will not be affected; Southern California Edison has ample reserve power to meet customer needs.

Emergency Sirens

posted Oct 17, 2011 11:08 AM by Bill Lawson

This is an important message from the County of Orange. On Wednesday, October 19, the Community Alert Siren System for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station will be tested several times between 10am and noon. We are notifying residents in Ladera Ranch due to the proximity to one of the sirens. This is only a test, and no action is required. Please do not call 911 unless you have an actual emergency.

During an emergency, the sirens alert residents to turn on the television or radio and listen for important emergency information.

This message was delivered using the County AlertOC notification system. You may register to receive emergency messages from the county by mobile phone, email, or text message at our website:
www.alertoc.com.

Two Million OC Residents Will

Receive AlertOC Test Call

(Santa Ana, CA) – More than two million Orange County residents will receive a call on Oct. 20

at 5 p.m. to test the County’s regional mass notification system known as AlertOC. This is the

second annual regional test of the system and will include 29 participating cities and the

county’s unincorporated areas.

The regional test is held in conjunction with the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill.

The AlertOC drill on Oct. 20 will replicate a large scale, multi-jurisdictional emergency requiring

thousands of numbers to be called simultaneously across Orange County’s entire region. The

phone message will urge all residents to prepare for real-life emergencies by registering their

cell numbers, text numbers and e-mail addresses at

www.AlertOC.com for the best chance to

receive vital, timely information when away from home.

As part of the AlertOC drill, the county’s emergency public information hotline will be activated

from 5 – 7 p.m. to provide preparedness tips and other emergency-related information.

Community members are invited to call (714) 628-7085 with questions on how to adequately

prepare their home or business for any emergency.

Emergencies can happen at any time. A wildfire could spread or a flood could close the roads

to a neighborhood while residents are away from home. In these instances, AlertOC is a

critical link for residents to immediately learn of any required actions.

For more information or to register alternate phone numbers, visit

www.AlertOC.com.

Commuters are reminded to be safe and use hands-free devices when talking on the phone

and driving.
